At Beyond Wonderland you will experience much more than just music. Don’t get us wrong, you are going to see some of the best live acts that the music scene has to offer, and you will also be sent on an adventure upon which many fantastic visions will be realized. You are invited to lose yourself a world of your own imagination.
Dozens of performers will be your guide through this wonderland. Looming stilt walkers can be seen roaming the festival grounds, trapeze artists will take your breath away with their aerial ballet, fearless fire twirlers will mesmerize your eyes, and go-go dancers will keep you moving to the beat as you are swept up into the freak show that is Beyond Wonderland.
As with all Insomniac events, the atmosphere we create for you at Beyond Wonderland is just as important to us as one of the headlining acts. So much is attention placed into creating an entire sensory experience, instead of just a place to listen to music. Each area of the festival will be meticulously transformed into its own themed utopia, as we transport you out of your own reality and down the rabbit hole that is Beyond Wonderland.
Various artists and groups of artists will have their creativity on display throughout the festival grounds. At Beyond Wonderland, an interactive experience built from metal, glass, lights, fire and everything in between awaits you. Take some time to wander through the art displays… We promise your senses will thank you!
Syzygryd, the first interactive art installation to be featured at Beyond Wonderland, is a metal sculpture measuring 60 feet in diameter and 13 feet tall at its highest point. It consists of three giant spiraling metal arms that join into a tornado of cubes in the center of the space. At the outer edges of the sculpture are three touchscreen grid sequencers which allow people to visually compose music together. The touchscreens are also connected to DMX controllers which sequence 1.5 kilowatts of LEDs and an array of flame effects, including a 20 foot fire tornado in the center. In short, the music composed by three strangers will be translated into fire, light, and sound.
The Golden Mean
The Golden Mean, the giant iron snail car is a 1966 VW Bug that has been transformed into a large snail using panels of copper patina sheet metal and perforated steel cut and shaped to form the snail. This “mutant vehicle” is 20 feet long, 8 feet wide and 12 feet tall. Its eye sockets shoot large burst of fire that brightens up the sky at night. The Golden Mean made an appearance at Beyond Wonderland 2010 and will make another appearance this year. Built in 2008, it has been cruising all over the country and will be making another stop in Southern California. Keep an eye out for this hotrod at Beyond Wonderland 2011!
Holding Flame is a 12'x12' steel pergola covered in sheet steel latticework. The ceiling is plumbed with propane which, when burning, creates a roiling ceiling of fire. Contours created on the surface of the ceiling control the pattern and flow of the fire as it moves outward, trying to rise and searching for oxygen. The result, when seen from below, is mesmerizing and engaging.
The creative masterminds that brought you the Cubatron are back and bringing a new three dimensional led art installation to Beyond Wonderland. The Diamond Tower is a 3-D diamond shaped light sculpture, 40ft tall, consisting of 2400 computer controlled color changing lights. It will display over 30 different dynamic effects for you to awe at throughout the night.
Beyond The Rabbit Hole
Always a favorite, Beyond the Rabbit Hole returns to Beyond Wonderland in 2011. Structured as a progressively shrinking, 186 foot long logarithmic spiraled tunnel covered with 4,000 feet of glittering white lights, this interactive art installation embodies the festival catchphrase, "to journey down the rabbit hole." The prismatic glasses you are handed before entering will build multiple layers of refraction, creating a kaleidoscope of patterns from the lights covering the structure.
Fishbug aka Chimera Sententia
Fishbug aka Chimera Sententia is a steel-based structure that describes a living creature at pause while it considers radical visions its mind can barely accommodate. Its extremities are exposed sculpted steel, and its thorax and head are covered in a flexible skin. Conical eyes protrude from its face while its glowing cranium, sculpted in translucent fiberglass, allows internal projections to play across its surface. The subtle pulse of flame, light, and kinetic effects impart a steady intent to live, to think, to thrive and invite participants to move through, over, and into this strange but welcoming creature.
Mutopia is an interactive mutant seed-pod fire sculpture. Rising up from the ground on three roots, flaming vines and leaves extend from a central ball to light up the night. The leaves glow with gentle flickering flames, while the central flower, sitting ten feet in the air, erupts bursts of fire from deep within its center up into the sky. Mutopia's effects are yours to control, with cranks and levers that bring it to life.
In the words of its designers "Mutopia embodies the dream/faith/experiment/reality of a generative interaction between the organic and inorganic worlds, and between the needs and desires of humans, plants and machines, as their paths and destinies cross and intertwine."
